Grand Hotel Birmingham Lead Decontamination

The Grand Hotel Birmingham, Colmore Road, Birmingham.

Main Contractor: Graham Construction Ltd

Consultants: MLM Group, Geo-environmental Engineer: Mike Williams
Project Manager: Mr Des Creelman.

Works: To remove all lead dust contamination from the internals of the building prior to internal fit-out commencing.

Duration: 10 weeks.

Capital Stone Renovation were approached by the consultants for the buyers of this hotel to tender for the decontamination of the entire internals of the structure that had become contaminated during the strip out.

The contamination originating both from lead-based paint and settled atmospheric lead from disturbed still air voids i.e. roof spaces, ceiling voids etc.

The decontamination works start with the installation of our hygiene and welfare units, and then once the site is established we move onto the clean-up. We generally start at the top of the building and work down sealing off rooms once they have been cleaned. Each room is cleaned top to bottom with HEPA (High- efficiency Particulate Air) filtered vacuum cleaners, and then wiped with ‘tacky’ cloths to trap any remaining dust. Once all this is completed the floor is finally vacuumed and then washed with a recovery scrubber/dryer. The surfaces are then tested by an independent analyst to establish if any contamination is still present.
